Today I<\/span> was surfing with the google earth tool and discovered a somehow weird thing. Looking at my neighborhood in Bucaramanga (my city),<\/span> called “the beautiful city”.<\/span> I<\/span> realized that the image appearing in google earth was +\/- two years outdated.<\/p>\n

The places where the two right stars are, now, there is a big shopping center.<\/span> In the star at the<\/span> left, now there is a condominium. The construction started more or less two years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

I<\/span> couldn\u2019t stop my curiosity and \u201cgoogled\u201d a little<\/span> bit to understand how it<\/span> works. First<\/span> I<\/span> discovered that in fact the images can be up to 3 years old.<\/span> The thing that surprised me was that my city<\/span> was not available in good<\/span> resolution a couple of months ago,<\/span> and when it<\/span> was available, the images dated more that 2 years old.<\/span><\/p>\n

Second, I<\/span> realized that my na\u00efve idea that this sharp low altitude images where taken from a satellite was not true. The zoom-in pictures are taken from an aircraft (as<\/span> Google says). When did this airplane passed over my home<\/span> taking pictures? I<\/span> really thought that this satellite cameras could zoom-in so much to see the time in my watch (ok! I\u2019m exaggerating).<\/p>\n

Before Google earth existed, it<\/span> was a program called Keyhole that Google bought. In fact the South<\/span> Korean<\/span> government<\/span> has demanded changes in the program in order not to reveal the location of their military<\/span> bases to their enemies. Even though this geographical information<\/span> is publicly available from different sources.<\/p>\n

If you haven\u2019t tried this program I\u2019m sure that lots of owws will come out from your mouth. Will this information<\/span> be available someday in real-time? This could be a nice<\/span> tool for<\/span> terrorists! Or maybe we could be able to see some topless girls at<\/span> Ibiza\u2019s beaches\u2026 Now you\u2019re thinking about huh?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
